Grand Canyon Grandview Trail Guide eBook Scott Thybony Reviews

I have previously purchased hard copies of the other trial guides in this series(hermit, south kaibab, north kaibab, bright angel). They are small enough to justify taking for some helpful highlights while under the rim. There are bits on geology, history & ecology along the trail as well as general hiking advice for the canyon area. Best of all it contains a great description of the trail itself as you descend or ascend. I loved this series of booklets so much that I was going to buy the grandview trail guide for the next planned hike. When I saw that it was available as an e-book I was excited to say the least. I even considered getting ebooks of my other hard copies. I bought the Grandview trail guide ebook first just to make sure it would be as good as the other hard copies I already owned.

I imagine the text is the same as the hard copy and the picture are okay, it's the illustrations of the map that suffered.
It didn't quite live up to the expectations of the other hard copies I own. These where key items I had come to expect and enjoy in All of the other trail guides.
The 2 maps each aprox 7.5" x 8" summarize the various points of the trail with elevations and distances. The trail is divided into 2 sections (hence 2 maps).. usually top-of-the-rim to mid-way on one and mid-way to the bottom on the other. While not meant for navigation, I found having the maps & information all on one page could be easily read and referenced while hiking. This ebook includes only 1 map that is so compressed that major parts of the text cannot be read. Using the kindle app on my 15" mac in full screen I found the map size about a 1/4 the size of the other hard copy booklets. Most of the smaller written details included are illegible (possibly even more so than a large pretty picture of a lizard) and other details have been omitted like distances between points. Zooming in doesn't help because the written information is just too blurred.

The general info you can expect to see on the other maps in this series of booklets
-a generic water key
-key points along the trail w/descriptions through out the book
-basic elevations at major points (feet & meters)
-basic rock groups & formations passed through
-basic geographic features (creeks, buttes & rapids)
-names of special trail segments & observation points (ie. The Chimney on South Kaibab)
-distances between key points along the trial (miles & km's)
-other major trails nearby marked
-campsites, ranger stations
-bathroom, water/rest stops, telephone
-approximate distance key for basic reference only (miles & km's)

The Grandview trail ebook copy of this map includes
-a generic water key - BLURRED
-key points along the trail w/descriptions through out the book
-basic elevation at the trailhead ONLY (feet & meters)
-basic rock groups & formations passed through - NOT LEGIBLE
-basic geographic features (creeks, buttes & rapids)
-basic trail spur's included, NO NAMES of trail segments given
-NO distances between points, NO mileage of any kind on map
-other major trails nearby ONLY, no marking for Cave of the Dome's
-campsites NOT MARKED, there is no ranger station N/A
-bathroom NOT MARKED, water N/A, telephone, N/A
-approximate distance key for basic reference only (miles & km's)
-Cave of the Dome's is NOT MARKED but is mentioned in the booklet

More information is included through out the booklet (elevations and some distances).. but it is not as easy to find or reference in a quick moment. Perhaps because the Grandview trail is not a corridor trail some details have been purposefully omitted in order to help preserve the backcountry campgrounds & their facilities from day hikers. The Grandview trail also is not as long as the other trail's and perhaps it requires only one map and not two. I still believe that they should have tried to make the one map in the book a little bit more legible than it is. Being able to read the ink on the map instead of just being teased by it would have been nice. If you have a choice buy the hard copy, it's light enough and worth taking on the trail.
