This is a book for biophiles, people who love wild animals. It is an eclectic collection of thirteen original multilayered stories with interrelated themes-stories within stories-about grizzly bear, cougar, wolf, wolverine, bison, wild sheep, pika, and others. Centering on the Greater Yellowstone region and the Northern Rockies, they incorporate current issues, attitudes, conservation, science, history, natural history, and folklore, and range from whimsical to the informed scientific. Interwoven into each essay are unusual and little known facts and facets about the animal and its history. All the stories convey the value and need for conservation and the importance of protecting and restoring not just the species themselves, but entire ecosystems and wildland habitats. Metaphorically, Green Fire refers to a flame that burns within wild creatures, a life force. Its glow reflects in the indomitable and resilient spirit of untamed nature and equates to the past vitality and abundance of once wild America. The heroes in this book are the wild animals the last plains bison, which near the end carried bullets embedded in their bodies from gun shots they had survived; the last wolves in the early twentieth century, who had missing toes, paws, teeth, and tails from having escaped leg hold traps, survived being shot, or had escaped death by disgorging poisons, but continued to elude their pursuers; the small bands of bighorn sheep that survived relentless year-round hunting by retreating to live in the most remote, inaccessible, and inhospitable crags; and the resilient beaver, that were once hunted and trapped to near extinction that have repopulated former habitats throughout the Rockies. The specialized language of science has been mostly put aside; instead the narratives employ an anecdotal approach akin to traditional nature writing intended for general audiences..

This is a work of both serious science and passionate love of nature--think of Carl Sagan narrating his Cosmos. Text alternates between vivid imagery redolent of passionate adjectives and measured descriptions of of the politics and arguments that surround wildlife laws. A single story takes you from primordial forest to a bureaucratic cubicle, from wondrously adaptive creatures to careless policy makers. I read about half of the very informative and intensely editorial introduction and then skipped to the stories--then I was hooked. Connecting intimately with beavers, caribou, and wolves helped me better appreciate the passion of the introduction. This book is a powerful read on many levels. I live a suburban-city life punctuated by roadkill, foraging deer, and occasional coyote howls--Green Fire helped me understand that all God's creatures are carrying on with or without me, but that I can enter their timeless story by honoring and protecting their place in the world.

Green Fire Stories from the Wild Earle F Layser 9781453682180 Books Reviews

The particular and personal way these stories are written is wonderful. Numerous photographs accompany the text. They are engaging, even haunting in black & white, and invite the reader further into this world of the wild. A gem of a read. A book to share.
I highly recommend "Green Fire" written by Earle Layser, a professional forester. With 4 decades of living and working in the mountains of the northwest, he is concerned about promoting and restoring America's wilderness ecosystems. His book, a marriage of science and imagination, contains 13 chapters covering 11 animals, one bird, and one type of pine tree. It includes anecdotes, folklore, anthropomorphism, historical and contemporary issues, and many facts. The author ranges from small pika rodents and ouzel water birds to wolverines, bison, wolves, and others. He identifies with the animals, bringing them to life. Much of the book's setting is in the greater Yellowstone region, but it also includes a chapter on Alaskan caribou. Readers who enjoy wilderness and animals, and who support conservation will come away from this book mentally refreshed and more deeply concerned about America's future.
One of this book's stories---"The Spirit of Tosi," about a grizzly bear's life history and its challenges living in Tosi Basin at the head the Green River in Wyoming-- won two separate awards in 2017 the Wyoming Writers Inc. award for young adult literature; and the Wyoming Art Council's recognition for fiction.
Enchanting and true stories about a man with an interesting career in some of the most beautiful places in America.
